On August 24, 2019, a tropical storm formed and was named “Dorian.” One day later, it intensified into a hurricane near St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. As of today, Sunday, September 1, a State of emergency has been declared in four states. Dorian has struck the Bahamas with catastrophic damage as an upgraded Category 5 Hurricane with sustained winds of up to 185 mph. Hurricane Dorian is now tied for the second-strongest storm of the Atlantic Ocean in recorded history.

In addition to Life Insurance Awareness Month, September is the most common month for hurricanes making landfall in the U.S., according to an analysis of 1851 to 2015 data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
